Inspired by the theme of exploration of new horizons in the Silicon Valley, Echoes of the New Frontier explores the process of searching and looking for the new, re-envisioning this search as the endless quest to know oneself.
The viewer is invited to explore a scene, which is augmented with visions of themselves from multiple perspectives, that seem to emerge from their familiar mirror reflection and populate the scene. A large two way mirror reflects the visitors, while an expansive view of Silicon Valley and the rising and setting sun, is revealed behind the mirror. The piece explores the process of looking, at museum objects, at ourselves, and at the world we live in as we seek to re-envision or find new meaning in the space between the familiar and the new horizon.
Viewer Scenario:
The visitor enters a room. One side of the room is a full sized mirror. After spotting their familiar reflection, they notice that the space beyond the mirror extends into the horizon: a scene with a silicon valley road moving toward the rising and setting sun. The great expanse is occasionally interrupted by a walking pedestrian. The visitor notices that the pedestrian is herself, from a different perspective, and a (slightly) different time, walking tentatively, looking, observing. They watch views of themselves throughout the scene, looking, searching for meaning, reiterated from different perspectives.
Technical Specs:
A two way mirror reflects the visitors, and cameras throughout the space capture the viewers from different perspectives. Using background removal and object detection algorithms, bodies are identified and extracted, and re-composited into the dynamic video projected onto the back of the mirror. The viewer sees the mirror reflection and the projection on the same mirror.
